Gel Candle Holiday Designs

St Pat Gel Candles

Gel Candle Designs: St. Patrick’s Day

Let’s all celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day and the Luck of the Irish with these delightful gel candles!

  • The base for this candle actually starts with our paraffin wax ‘deep dish cobbler’. It is always lots of fun to be able to use our candle stash in different ways.
  • The cobbler piece comes predrilled with a hole in the center for the wick. We placed the ‘cobbler’ on a small dessert plate, with the 60s series wick installed.
  • Next we added a piece of our white color pallet to melted gel to make the white ‘icing’ for our cake. We used our new HerbEssence FO which has a very clean and fresh scent perfect for so many springtime candles.
  • Allow the gel to start to cool and thicken to resemble icing.
  • We poured the gel over the top of the cobbler piece, allowing it to drape over the sides of the paraffin base.
  • Next we added our green wax shamrocks around the base of the candle. Since our gel was still ‘wet’ the shamrocks adhere right to the sides of our cake.
  • Then we sprinkled some gold glitter and bright green foil shamrocks randomly onto the cake and the plate.. added our glass rainbow to the top, and finally our St. Paddy glass embed himself to the front.

What a cute decoration for the March holiday!

UPDATE

Question From Reader:

From the photo you have on the Shamrock Candle (above) You have put foil shamrocks on the candle itself. I was wondering… Is this safe to put anything that will burn ON a candle???? I could make gorgeous Valentine candles with baking candy and other foil hearts…etc…but is this safe????? I didn’t think it would be safe to do the above….Especially IN or ON candles I would want to sell. Anyone? Rosie

Patti ’s reply:
Dear Rosie, “Glitter and foil shapes” can be made of all kinds of poly products. Some poly products burn badly and even can produce very toxic fumes. Others have flame retardants added, and even others, such as poly products which are microwave and dishwasher safe, are nonflammable. So it is always important to hold that flame to any piece you are going to use in or on a candle and insure that it will not torch and become its own wick. The Shamrocks you see on the candle do not flame. The problem with sugar ingredients is that the sugar can caramelize and burn. That’s why we change over to wax ‘candy pieces’. Good Questions!!! Best, Patti at BioMax

Editor’s Note: we do not recommend putting any flammable items inside your gel candle… if you choose to do so… we recommend using double-nested glassware (items and gel outer glass / gel and wick inner glass) to keep the inflammable items away from the wick.

Sparkling Snowflake Gel Candles

Gel Candle Designs: Sparkling Snowflake Candles

Wow! – We have some EXCITING new ideas that are fast and easy for the novice, as well as innovative and professional-looking to challenge the seasoned gel candle maker. As the holidays approach, we have the lead on the commercial market with our “handcrafted products” uniquely created from our own hands and minds… as we share our talents, and bring smiles to the faces of our customers.

In this article we have attempted to give you lots of extra detail and new information so you can answer questions at your shows. Remember knowledge is power! Having many facts about your products arms you if you tend to be a little nervous at the beginning of your shows. Customers always have questions and you want to be prepared and knowledgeable.

SPARKLING SNOWFLAKES….

Our Sparkling-Snowflake Candle are scented with our newest festive scent, “Holiday Icicles”. We have always found that anything BLUE is a top seller in candles.

We used just a few sprinkles of our Blue Color Crystals (no mess like liquids!) in melted gel for beautiful winter-blue color. We also added a few sprinkles of celestial blue glitter to add the necessary glimmer.

We selected a piece of glassware with flat sides so that our wax snowflakes would easily be visible, right up close to the glass wall.

We poured the gel and then MOST IMPORTANTLY… waited… the necessary time for the gel to cool to about 140-150 degrees. (Check with candy thermometer if you are just learning wax embedding.)

Next we dusted our white wax snowflakes with celestial silver glitter to give them depth and more definition once embedded.

Using our embedding tool (BET) we positioned the wax flakes around the sides of the candle.

Our finishing touch is to embed a couple iridescent 1″ glitter snowflakes between the wax snowflakes…this is a really popular look because these flakes show only from certain angles so that they magically appear and disappear.

We also added a very slight dusting of celestial glitter to the TOP of the candle for that added sparkling finish.

That’s all and simply beautiful!

Pumpkin and Candy Corn Gel Candles

Halloween Pumpkin and Candy Corn Gel Candles

It is said that Halloween is one of the most decorated holidays besides Christmas, so in preparation, this month we feature a Pumpkin Patch gel candles, with glass embeds, and a Candy Corn Candle, with wax embeds. Let’s get started..

PUMPKIN PATCH CANDLE

Halloween Pumpkin Gel Candles

Halloween Pumpkin Gel Candles

The highlight of this candle is a glass, orange Jack-O’-Lantern and two black bats. We poured a mix of black sand and celestial gold glitter in the base of the glassware and sealed it off with thin layer of gel, making sure our glass wick bead was above the sand level so that the flame will self-extinguish before reaching the sand. The gold glitter adds a lot of depth and makes the sand appear three-dimensional.

Next we added some clear chunks of gel to help hold our glass embeds in place, speed-up our candle cooling time and also give more interest. We then sprinkled the chunks with more celestial gold glitter. Now it is time to pour the rest of the candle, and we chose Pumpkin Pie fragrance. We allowed the gel to semi cool before lowering our pumpkin and bat embeds. Give that final tug on the wick to make sure it is super straight and trim to ¼” for the initial burn. Our finishing touch was a few little white ghosts and BOO! foil shapes sprinkled on the top of the candle. Simple, easy, fast and fun!

CANDY CORN CANDLE

Halloween - Fall - Candy Corn Gel Candles

Halloween - Fall - Candy Corn Gel Candles

Our second feature candle this month is a candy jar candle decorated with wax candy corn in the yellow, white and orange Halloween colors. Candy candles are fun to make and always a hit with young and old. (Keep in mind that if you are using real ‘candy’, you must use a two-piece glass arrangement because, for safety, real candy should never be housed in the same container as the wick.)

Hinged jars are easy to find at local dimes stores and are perfect for candy candles. In order to keep your raw costs down, we recommend that you merely line the walls of the glassware with the wax embeds and thus keeping the center cylinder pure gel for that long burn time that customers love from gel candles. This will save you money yet still give a very good visual of the candy theme.

We like to color the gel a pale shade, coordinating with the embeds we are using. Then if we get some color bleed, it will not be near as apparent. Colors tend to bleed most with reds and deep blues and purples. The fragrances you choose can also have an affect on the coloring, so keep all this in mind as you test your designs.

We colored our gel a light orange using just a few of our peach color crystals (no mess or spills). We scented the gel with our Candy Corn fragrance. We poured the candle about ¾ full and tossed in a few gel chunks to help cool the gel faster and start our ’set’. We know that if we insert wax embeds into hot gel, they WILL melt so we need to be patient and wait for the gel to get really thick. We test this by circular ’stirring’ with the wick and also feeling the heat of the gel using our finger. This takes some experience so you must be careful when you are starting out! Place your hands around the outside of the glassware to get an idea of how warm the gel is. to guard against burns. Unlike the nasty, skin-removing burns from hot glue guns, the gel will slide right off the skin, however, you still need to be careful and children should always be supervised.

The height of the gel should still allow for displacement of the wax embeds you are going to add. We place the wax candies in a jigsaw puzzle pattern filling in the sidewalls to look full and attractive. Use your own creativity as you embed your pieces, and use your embedding tool (B.E.T.) to turn the pieces the direction you want. Snip the wick at ¼” and admire your work!!

There are many really cute pieces of glassware decorated for Halloween. so keep an eye out. Have a fun and safe Halloween!!!

Father’s Day Sports Gel Candles

Gel Candle Designs: Father’s Day /Sports Candles

For our all-around sports-loving Dads, we create Father’s Day sporting gel candles.

Golf Gel Candle

Gel Candle Golf Design

We chose a piece of glassware with large enough diameter so we could embed a baseball, football, basketball and soccer ball.

We used neon green gel in the bottom of the glassware to resemble the ‘grass’ effect, pour and allow to set up. Next we pour clear gel scented with HUSKY GUY FO.

Since the sports embeds are lightweight, we allowed the gel to set and thicken so we could then embed and position them where we want, for an attractive visual appeal.

If you have Dad’s with particular team favorites.. use colored sands (don’t forget the safety glass bead on the wick above the sand layer) to represent the team colors and attach team stickers to the outside of the glassware for those ‘custom orders’.

So Simple. and quick sales!

Easter Fun Gel Candles

Gel Candle Designs: Easter Fun Candles

RememberBunny with Pink Eggs Gel Candles all the fun you had at Easter time when you are a kid?

Well its time to have some fun again – gel candles style!

These projects are easy enough for the whole family and are much more fun than dyeing Easter Eggs and are sure to be a hit.

Make sure you always use caution when making gel candles.

This article will discuss:

  • Easter Color Candle
  • Easter Candle Using Mini Marbles
  • Easter Egg Candle
  • Every Bunnies Favorite Candle

Easter Color Candle

This Easter candle uses a square votive glass and is made to be a good Easter Candle without spending too much money or time.

Gel Candle Easter ColorsStart with some good pastel colored marbles, a square votive glass, and some glass carrot embeds.

Put the wick in the center and randomly place your marbles in the glass.

Arrange the marbles around until you get the look you are after.

Then simply find a good little nook to tuck your carrots into on the out edge of the glass. Look at all four sides of the candle. A great gel candle looks good from any angle. When you are happy with the arrangement of your embeds then get ready to pour.

At Kewl Candle Factory we really like to take our heat gun and “take the chill off” the entire glass and embeds. We use a laser sighted infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of embeds and glass to about 140 F. If you do not have a thermometer like this just hold the heat gun to the outside and the inside of the glass for about 30-45 seconds each. If the glass it almost too hot to touch, then you have the right temperature. What this will do is cause the gel to “suck up” to the embeds (marbles etc). After the pour we then take the heat gun to the outside of the glass and clear any major bubbles caught under the marbles.

We do not send too much time trying to get a bubble free candle. We like some bubbles but not too many especially the large pockets of air under the marbles.

Easter Candle Using Mini Marbles

This Easter candle is made like a lot of gel candles, using sand as a base. We do like to do a couple of things differently. One thing is we like to use two colors of sand in a layered effect. We also like to use our mini marbles to make an Easter Egg Effect.

In the picture of this candle you will see a detail photo that shows the mini marbles.
Using Marbles for Effect in Gel Candle Designs
To make this candle lets start off with the square votive glass.

Center you wick in the middle.

Then get two colors of green sand. Take a small hand full of each color in each hand. Then by letting a small amount flow out of each hand begin layering the sand in the glass for your base. Start with the left hand and squeeze out some of that color very UN evenly. Then do the same with the right hand. Repeat this until you have enough sand (about 1/2″). The more UN even the layers the better. Make each layer very thin.

Now that you have your base, take a glass bunny and a carrot and place them in the candle. We also included a little chicky on our candle.

Then take your mini marbles and sprinkle in just a tiny amount in different place in the candle. Take a good look at the scene from all sides of the candle. If you are happy then you are ready to pour.

We like to do at this point is too pour a very thin layer of gel over the entire base of the candle. We feel that this “seals” in the sand. It will prevent the sand swirling around any (careful pouring will also prevent this).

After the first thin layer sets a little we like to take the heat gun and warm it up about. That’s right “take the chill off”. Emeril might have BAM but at Kewl Candle Factory we have got “take the chill off!” This warms up the top off the thin layer and helps prevent layer lines.

After your pour we use tongue depressors to help keep the wick straight. We also sometimes use the heat gun on the outside to clear off any outer bubbles.

Easter Egg Candles

This candle again uses the square votive. It also uses Solid Glass Eggs and Cheater Glass Gems available from us at gelcandlesupply.com.

This is an easy candle to make and looks great. In the picture we show a detail of this candle burning. All you need to do is:

Center your wick in the glass.

Then take four or five of the “cheater glass gems”. We call these glass stones “cheater gems” because their main use is to float fish in sea scenes without really floating them. Just stick a couple of these on the bottom and then set your fish on top. It looks like it is floating but it is not really. Ok well back on the subject of the Easter Egg Candle. We are really just using these large clear gems to place our eggs in an upright and well-positioned place in the candle. These large gems work well on the bottom but you will need some clear filler in the middle of the candle. We did not have any small clear marbles at the house so we used some clear wick beds to fill out the center.

Once you have all this in the eggs should be upright and symmetric in the glass. Once you are happy with the look then you are ready to pour. Once again we like to “take the chill off” with the heat gun.

Make your pour, let it set up, and then make someone’s day with this beautiful Easter candle.

Every Bunnies Favorite Candle

Bunny Gel Candle with Large Eggs

This might be the all time favorite candle(s) here at Kewl Candle Factory! Everyone who has seen these candles loves them.

We just added these great stuffed bunnies to our website and we think they will sell out quickly. We made three candles using the same “Perfect Stemware” glass and the bunnies. All candles use the same basic techniques as described in the above projects. After the candle is poured and set up we just add the adorable little stuffed bunnies. These bunnies have a small Velcro pad on their feet and the fin nice and snug around the stem of the glass.

If you look closely at the candle with pink eggs you will see that we used mini marbles to cover the wick tab. Let your imagination run wild with these elegant Easter candles.

Safety is #1

Always use caution when making gel candles and ALWAYS put warning labels on the bottom of your candles.

Never place any item that could burn inside of the candle.

Easter Chick Gel Candles

Gel Candle Designs: Easter Chick Nests

In line with the present craze of dessert candles, we are finding more and more ways to combine the features of paraffin and gel together for very creative, handcrafted gel candles.

This month we feature the EASTER CHICK NEST candles-cute little hatched chicks hovering over jelly beans and Easter grasses in a neat little green paraffin nest, which you can form yourself merely with a 5″ pie tin, some green paraffin and a glass dessert cup.

And here is how to do it!

We used gEaster Chick in Nest Gel Candle Designreen paraffin… just because Easter is green :o ))

Pour the melted wax to fill the pie tin about half full. (The tin acts as your mold).

Use your favorite Easter scent — we chose Jelly Bean FO.

Since we are in Ohio and the temperatures are still cool, we can set the pie tins out of doors to speed up the initial set. We want the top of the paraffin to ’skin over’. When it has done this go to the next step… which is to create the cavity for the ‘nest’.

Create a slight nick in the skin of the paraffin and gently set a glass custard dish down into the paraffin and center it in the pie tin. Don’t push down too far because you want a medium thick floor in your nest. The displacement of the glass insert will cause the paraffin to climb up the side wall of the pie tin.

Return the tin to cool temperatures and allow to totally harden.

When it has completely cooled, you can easily pull the wax from the tin and remove the glass insert. VALLLAAA! you have a cute little green nest!!

We used our B.E.T. (BioMax Embedding Tool) to pierce a hole in the bottom of the nest so we can thread the wick thru the bottom of the nest.

Next we place some chunks of unmelted gel in the nest and overpour scented gel to fill the nest and create the body of the candle, allowing it to partially set.

Next we mixed stearic with dyes to make pastel pink (using hot pink neon powder), green (neon green powder) and purple (liquid dye) to create our variety colors of Easter grass for our Chicks to sit on.
Easter Chick in Nest in Clear Box Gel Candle Design
Sprinkle the ‘grasses’ on the gel and set three wax chicks around the wick.

Then we added a few wax jelly beans.

Our final step is to drizzle some clear gel over the top of the chicks, grass and jelly beans to create the gloss and ‘fresh hatched’ look.

To package our Chick Nest, we added some commercial Easter grass to our clear 6″ box. great for shipping too!

Enjoy and Have Fun!

Valentine Cherries & Chocolate Dessert Gel Candles

Valentine Gel Candles with Cherries in a Cloud and Chocolate Gel Candle Designs

After Christmas, the first thing we do is try to find a way to drop those few extra pounds that the holidays seem to attach to our bodies. What happens next? Valentine’s Day. These Valentine Gel Candles are filled with beautifully decorated red, satin heart-shaped boxes of zero calories.

Have your cakes and candies with Romance and conversation, instead of fat and sugar. And spend the evening with someone you love.

We have many wonderful wax pieces to give us a start at building some of the most tempting candles you can imagine. Whether you start with a fudge brownie base or a cake or pie, as you learn to use paraffin and gel together, you find another way that the ideas are simply endless.

Pay attention to restaurant dessert trays and the pictures in cookbooks as you can recreate all of it with candles.

Please note that all references made in this article to food items are actually non-edible  ‘WAX’

This month we feature our ‘Cherries in a Cloud’ candle and also our ‘Death by Chocolate’…. what a way to go! A description for building the candles comes now. the delightful scent and fun will come when it is given as a gift and enjoyed.

CHERRIES IN A CLOUD GEL CANDLES

We start our Cherries in a Cloud candle with a wax heart, colored a light beige candle coloring, and scented with our Butter creme Vanilla.

(We have predrilled the hole in the center for the wick. and for goodness sakes… make and sell candles to BURN… not merely to grow dust!! Life is too short!)

Valentine Cherry Tart Gel Candles
Remember not to clip the wick too short; wait to see the finished height of your candle to decide where to cut the wick.

Next we melted some opaque white paraffin and scented with Wild Cherry gel candle safe fragrance. Once the paraffin has melted, remove from heat and allow it to start setting up. At this point you can use any kind of utensil to stir and fluff.  Some candle makers like to add a little gel to their paraffin, and make it a little more flexible instead of brittle.

Next pick up pieces of the white ‘whipping cream’ wax and form little pieces to line the outside edge of the heart. Think of decorating a cake. in fact with all the dessert candles; just pretend you are using real food items. Build and decorate the candles with the same ‘culinary’ eye. If you wish, you could put a border of whipping cream at the plate baseline of the heart and also on the top cake surface. If you find the pieces
become too set, you can re-melt a bit of the paraffin, allow it to cool till slightly thickened, and drizzle over your whipping cream pieces to lock them together. Even if drizzles of the wax flow over the side of the
‘cake’, it simply looks like icing or ice cream melting and flowing.

Once you have your whipping cream border(s) where you want them, then fill in the area inside the white border with wax cherries. Your last step is to melt gel, color with red and scent with Wild Cherry. You want to allow the gel to cool until it is ‘thick syrup’ stage.

Pour over the cherries, filling in the nooks and crannies. The wick should be trimmed approximately1/4  inch above the highest peak of the candle. Make sure the candle looks symmetrical and attractive to the eye. And DON’T  lick fingers!!! It doesn’t taste the way it looks!!!!!
Our second feature candle is DEATH BY CHOCOLATE GEL CANDLE DESIGN

In our preparation work, we first poured some dark brown wax, scented with Milk Chocolate or Chocolate Fudge FO, into a shallow pan about 1/8  thick.

When the wax is almost hard, yet pliable, cut pieces and curl for chocolate curls and chunks.

Chocolate Dessert Gel Candle Design

We also used some of our wax Teddi Grahams, cut into pieces to resemble walnut chips. Our wax chocolate crumb topping will act as an “Oreo” type sprinkle. Always find ways to make multiple uses of the items in your *candle stash.

We start with our mocha colored snack cake base. Again, a hole is predrilled for the 50s series wick in the center of snack cake. You can use any type of white wax piece to build the height of this candle… molded mini bundt, ice cream scoop, or whipping cream dollop. Thread this piece also onto the wick. Thus you have the ‘body’ of the candle and simply need to add the scented ‘toppings’ for the appeal and pizzazz.

We then melt gel and scent with Milk Chocolate FO and colored with mocha brown coloring, either using liquid dyes or color palettes. Again, the SECRET is to allow the gel to THICKEN like syrup. If you pour it hot, it will simply melt your base pieces and run all over the plate.

We pour our gel from the melting pot to a microwave safe, handled pan with spouts. You can swirl the gel in this pan to hurry the ’set’. When it looks ‘gooey’ start pouring over the top of your ice cream scoop and
allow to run down the sides. You want it thick and delicious looking. Multiple layers will add a ‘richer’ look also.

While the gel is still warm, sprinkle some chocolate crumb topping, walnut chips (cut from teddi grahams) and push your chocolate curls randomly to look attractive. Remember NOT to cover over all of the white ice cream scoop or you will have nothing other than a dark brown ‘glob’. You want to see the color contrasts.

You can add a wax cherry at the top, next to wick if desired. We like to also drizzle the chocolate gel onto the plate, decoratively, and sprinkle more crumb topping to decorate the serving plate and candle base.

There you have it.. you will be amazed how authentic you can design dessert candles. Package them in the window dessert boxes and your customers will take three looks and STILL ask “Is it real?”  My answer?? I have never created ANYTHING but REAL!!!. Of course. ‘Perspective’  is in the eye of the beholder.
